Does a larger number always mean better performance?
You will describe figures in English, calculate a change and explain what an indicator can and cannot show. The aim is to connect a result to a management question, rather than read a list of numbers aloud.
1. Read the unit, period and definition
An indicator is a piece of information selected to help assess a situation or an objective. It may describe activity, money, time or satisfaction. Before interpreting a number, identify what is counted, the unit, the period and the source. One hundred repairs during a month and one hundred people using a service during a year do not describe the same thing. A value becomes useful when its definition is clear enough for someone else to understand and compare it.
Constructed classroom document, fictional monthly report for Bridge Cycle in Bristol: In March, the workshop completes one hundred bicycle repairs and earns four thousand pounds in repair revenue. In April, it completes one hundred and twenty repairs and earns four thousand eight hundred pounds in repair revenue. Paid working time allocated to repairs is two hundred hours in March and two hundred and forty hours in April. Costs are not provided. A separate feedback form receives twenty responses in March, sixteen positive, and thirty responses in April, twenty-four positive. Participation is voluntary.
Read repair revenue as income from the repair activity in this report. It is not total organisational income because fees for training or donations could exist elsewhere. It is also not profit: costs are missing. The report counts repairs, not necessarily different customers. One person might request more than one repair. These distinctions prevent a description from quietly changing the meaning of the original data.
Vocabulaire
- revenue :
- increase :
- Hausse ; le verbe increase peut être suivi de by ou to.
- percentage point :
- Point de pourcentage, pour comparer deux taux.
- working hour :
Describe the change in repair activity without making a claim about profit.
Résultat : Bridge Cycle completed one hundred repairs in March and one hundred and twenty in April. The number increased by twenty repairs. Repair revenue also rose, but the report does not provide costs, so we cannot conclude that profit increased.

Which unit and period should you mention when reporting four thousand eight hundred? Why is « the organisation made four thousand eight hundred » incomplete?
Voir la réponseMasquer la réponse
The figure is four thousand eight hundred pounds of repair revenue in April. The shorter sentence omits the currency, the month and the activity. It can also be misunderstood as a statement about profit or total income.
2. Describe a change and compare ratios
To calculate a relative change, subtract the initial value from the final value, then divide by the initial value. Multiply by one hundred to express the result as a percentage. Repairs increase from one hundred to one hundred and twenty: the difference is twenty, and twenty divided by one hundred gives a twenty per cent increase. Revenue rises by eight hundred pounds; eight hundred divided by four thousand also gives twenty per cent. The initial value is the reference in both calculations.
English prepositions matter. Increased by twenty means that twenty is the change. Increased to one hundred and twenty gives the final level. Increased from one hundred to one hundred and twenty gives both endpoints. Read decimal points and currencies carefully. Four thousand eight hundred pounds can be written £4,800 in an English document. The comma groups thousands; it is not the French decimal comma. When the source uses another convention, explain the unit rather than guessing.
A ratio relates two quantities. Repairs per paid working hour equal one hundred divided by two hundred in March, or zero point five. In April, one hundred and twenty divided by two hundred and forty is also zero point five. Activity increased, but this particular ratio stayed the same. It is a partial measure: it does not include all possible resources or tell us about repair complexity. You should not label it complete productivity without explaining its scope.
Exemple résolu
Compare repair activity and repairs per paid working hour across the two months.
Résultat : Repair activity increased by twenty per cent. However, paid working hours also increased by twenty per cent. The ratio remained at zero point five repairs per paid working hour in both months. The workshop did more repairs, but the available figures do not show an improvement in this partial efficiency measure.

3. Interpret performance with several perspectives
Performance depends on the organisation’s objectives and the people affected. A commercial activity needs financial resources, but an organisation may also pursue social or environmental objectives. More repairs can be useful, yet workers may face greater pressure or users may wait longer. An assessment should connect indicators instead of declaring that one number represents the whole organisation. Explain whose perspective is being considered and why the indicator matters to that perspective.
The feedback data illustrate another limit. Positive responses are sixteen out of twenty in March and twenty-four out of thirty in April. Both proportions equal eighty per cent. There are more positive responses in April, but the positive response rate has not increased. Since participation is voluntary, the result describes respondents. It does not automatically describe every customer. The report gives neither the total number invited nor the reasons why others did not answer.
For the British cultural context, consult GOV.UK, Setting up a social enterprise: https://www.gov.uk/set-up-a-social-enterprise. A community interest company is intended to benefit the community. This helps explain why a presentation about Bridge Cycle can discuss access to training alongside repair income. It does not tell you which objectives this fictional workshop has achieved. Its social purpose is a reason to choose relevant indicators, not proof of successful social outcomes.
A useful commentary separates observation, interpretation and recommendation. Observation: the repair volume rose. Interpretation: additional paid hours accompanied that rise. Recommendation: examine waiting time and the types of repair before changing staffing. Use suggests for an interpretation and would need for missing evidence. Avoid proves when the comparison leaves other explanations open. A recommendation becomes stronger when it names the information that could change the decision.
Exemple résolu
Explain the feedback results to an English-speaking colleague, then summarise the limitation in French.
Résultat : Positive responses increased from sixteen to twenty-four, but the positive response rate stayed at eighty per cent. The figures concern voluntary respondents, so they cannot be generalised automatically to all customers.

4. Au bac : give a reasoned commentary
Au bac — figure, calculation, interpretation, limit
- Introduce the indicator with its source, unit and period. State the management question it helps answer.
- Show a short calculation using the initial value as the reference for a relative change.
- Describe the result in a full English sentence. Distinguish increased by from increased to.
- Compare another relevant indicator and finish with a precise limit or a request for further information.
For an oral exercise, your partner reads the April report aloud while you keep the March figures on your paper. Note only units and values. Then describe one change and one stable ratio. Your partner asks whether the organisation is more profitable. Answer from the evidence and identify the missing costs. This combines listening, speaking and interaction. You do not need a complicated chart to show that you understand how a number is produced and what it means.
