How can we compare two organisations fairly when they have different purposes, services and resources?

You will construct a comparison in English, examine the sources behind it and explain why a ranking may be misleading.

1. Establish a common question and respect different purposes

A comparison needs a question and shared criteria. Asking which organisation has the largest revenue is different from asking which one gives local residents better access to repairs. The first question concerns a financial measure; the second also needs information about price, location, opening hours and users. Decide what you want to understand before collecting attractive numbers. Otherwise the available data can silently replace the real management question.

Constructed classroom document A, fictional profile: North Wheel Ltd is a bicycle repair business in Leeds. Its stated objective is to develop a profitable repair activity. It operates two shops, employs twelve people and offers online booking. In one month it completes two hundred and forty repairs and records twelve thousand pounds of repair revenue. Constructed classroom document B, fictional profile: Neighbour Cycle CIC operates one workshop in the same city. It aims to improve access to repairs and introductory training. It has eight paid employees and volunteers whose hours are not recorded. During the same month it completes one hundred and sixty repairs and records eight thousand pounds of repair revenue.

The profiles describe activities and stated purposes, not verified achievements. North Wheel’s commercial objective does not mean that its customers or employees have no social concerns. Neighbour Cycle’s community purpose does not mean that financial resources are irrelevant. Both organisations need to coordinate work and continue operating. A comparison should keep these similarities while recognising the differences. Avoid replacing analysis with a contrast between a selfish business and a generous organisation.

Vocabulaire

comparison criterion :
Critère commun permettant de comparer deux objets.
purpose :

Write a balanced opening comparison using purpose and activity.

Résultat : Both fictional organisations provide bicycle repairs in Leeds. North Wheel Ltd seeks to develop a profitable repair activity, whereas Neighbour Cycle CIC combines repairs with a stated community purpose and introductory training. These different purposes affect which indicators are relevant; they do not by themselves show which organisation performs better.

Propose two shared comparison criteria and one criterion that requires particular attention for Neighbour Cycle’s stated purpose. Explain in English.

Voir la réponse

Both organisations can be compared on repair activity and access conditions, provided the definitions match. Access to introductory training deserves particular attention for Neighbour Cycle because it is part of its stated purpose. We would need actual information about training provision and participation to assess that objective.

2. Examine resources, production and financial measures

Both organisations produce services, but their operating arrangements differ. Two shops may extend geographical access while creating coordination and premises costs. One workshop may concentrate equipment and staff while requiring some users to travel farther. These are possible effects, not measured results in the profiles. To assess them, you would need locations, opening times, demand and costs. State a possible mechanism before claiming that one arrangement is superior.

North Wheel completes more repairs in total, but it also has more paid employees. Dividing repairs by paid headcount gives twenty repairs per paid employee for each organisation in the observed month. This does not prove equal productivity. Employee hours are unknown, job roles may differ, and volunteer input is missing for Neighbour Cycle. A partial ratio can make a comparison more informative while remaining insufficient for a broad judgement.

Repair revenue per repair is fifty pounds for each organisation: twelve thousand divided by two hundred and forty, and eight thousand divided by one hundred and sixty. This is an average amount of revenue per completed repair in the defined period. It is not necessarily the price of every repair. The mix of work could differ, and the figures provide no costs. You cannot infer the profit margin or decide that one organisation is cheaper for a particular repair.

Exemple résolu

Compare the repair figures and state why they do not support a complete productivity ranking.

Résultat : North Wheel completes more repairs in total. However, each organisation records twenty repairs per paid employee in the month. This partial ratio is the same, but paid hours, job roles and volunteer input are unknown. We therefore cannot use it to rank overall productivity or assume identical working conditions.

Can the fifty-pound average revenue per repair prove that both organisations charge every customer the same price? Give a reason and one question for further research.

3. Put cultural terms and sources under scrutiny

Institutional vocabulary carries cultural information. GOV.UK presents a community interest company as a form of limited company intended to benefit the community. This helps explain the letters CIC in the fictional profile. It does not make CIC an exact translation of a French association, and it does not mean that all British social enterprises share one legal form. Preserve the original term when a direct translation would hide a significant difference.

Authentic resource to consult: https://www.gov.uk/set-up-a-social-enterprise, Setting up a social enterprise. Locate the different possible structures and the CIC section. Explain to a French partner why a social purpose and a trading activity can coexist. Then make clear that this general information does not verify the performance of either fictional organisation. A cultural comparison should improve understanding of a specific setting, rather than assign fixed behaviours to a nationality.

Source evaluation is part of the comparison. A profile written for customers may emphasise convenience. An internal report may use technical definitions unfamiliar to outsiders. A financial table may be precise but cover only one activity. Ask who produced the document, for whom, when and for what purpose. Then check the definition of each measure. A source does not become useless because it has a purpose, but that purpose can explain why important information is missing.

If you compare a promotional page from one organisation with an internal report from another, the information may be uneven. Do not treat the more detailed source as proof that its organisation has more problems. It may simply report difficulties more openly. Seek the same type of evidence for each case, and mark gaps explicitly. This is especially important when comparing claims about sustainability, inclusion or staff wellbeing, where a short slogan can hide the absence of measurable outcomes.

Exemple résolu

An interviewer says: « Neighbour Cycle has a community purpose, so it must provide better access. » Give a critical but constructive answer.

Résultat : Its community purpose makes access a relevant objective, but it does not prove that access is better. We would need comparable information on opening hours, booking channels, prices and the people actually served. We should also ask who cannot use either service. The purpose guides the assessment; it does not replace evidence.

One organisation reports detailed complaints; the other publishes only positive testimonials. Explain in English why a complaint count alone would be an unfair comparison and propose a better approach.

4. Au bac : build a comparative argument

Au bac — compare by criterion, then qualify

  1. State the comparison question and explain why the selected criteria fit both organisations.
  2. Organise the presentation criterion by criterion. For each one, give evidence for both cases rather than two separate descriptive lists.
  3. Use whereas or while for a contrast, similarly for a shared feature and however for a limit. Explain the relationship after the connector.
  4. Conclude with a bounded answer. Identify which additional information could change your judgement.

In a pair exercise, one person presents North Wheel and the other presents Neighbour Cycle. Each listens for a claim that goes beyond the source and asks a precise question. Then produce a joint French summary for a local partner. It should contain one similarity, one difference and one uncertainty. Mediation requires preserving the purpose of the comparison: a summary about access should not become a ranking based only on revenue.

Summary

Repère et sens
Common criteria — The same question is asked of both cases.
Context — Purpose, resources and institutional terms affect interpretation.
Conclusion — A comparison answers a defined question and names its limits.
