Coopérer dans une organisation en anglais
Coopérer en anglais
Environ 35 minutes
How can a team work together when people have different roles, information and expectations?
In this lesson, you will clarify a request, divide responsibilities and write a useful message in English. You will also learn to reformulate information for someone who was not present.
1. Understand roles and a shared objective
Cooperation means working with others towards a shared objective. It requires more than dividing a list of tasks. Team members need to know what each task means, who is responsible and when the result is needed. They also need a way to report difficulties. A person may have useful information without having authority to approve a decision. Keep contribution and responsibility distinct: listening to an idea does not automatically transfer the final decision to its author.
Constructed classroom document, fictional situation: Bridge Cycle, a community workshop in Bristol, is preparing a beginner repair session. Maya coordinates the session. Oliver checks the tools, and Sam prepares the information for participants. The objective is to welcome twelve learners on Saturday morning. Tool checks must be completed by Thursday afternoon. Participant information can only be sent after Maya confirms the session. On Wednesday, Oliver reports that two repair stands need checking. Sam has drafted a message, but the room has not yet been confirmed.
Read the message as a sequence of dependencies. Sam can prepare a draft before confirmation, but sending it is a different action. Maya needs information about the tools and the room before making a reliable announcement. If one task is delayed, the team should communicate the effect on the next task. This prevents a common problem: each person finishes their own work while the shared result remains impossible.
Vocabulaire
- role :
- Place occupée dans le fonctionnement du groupe.
- responsibility :
- Tâche ou décision dont une personne répond.
- deadline :
- Échéance à laquelle un résultat est attendu.
- draft :
- Brouillon proposé avant validation ou diffusion.
- to confirm :
- Confirmer une information ou une décision.
- to clarify :
Explain who should do what before the participant message is sent.
Résultat : Oliver should report the result of the tool checks. Maya should confirm the room and the session before the final message is sent. Sam can prepare the draft now, but should wait for confirmation before sending participant information. The tasks are linked, so a delay should be shared with the team.

Which information is confirmed, and which information is still uncertain on Wednesday? Give two examples in English.
Voir la réponseMasquer la réponse
The team roles and the intended group of twelve learners are stated. The room is not yet confirmed, and two repair stands still need checking. The planned session should therefore not be described as fully confirmed to participants.
2. Make a clear request and check understanding
A useful request names an action, an expected result and a time. Please check the equipment is more precise if it states which equipment and when the team needs the result. Politeness helps the relationship, but a polite message can still be unclear. Could you check the two repair stands and report the result by Thursday afternoon? gives a concrete task. The receiver can accept it, ask a question or explain why the deadline is difficult.
Do not use silence as confirmation. A colleague may not have read the message or may understand it differently. Ask for acknowledgement when the task affects other people. You can say: Could you confirm that this deadline works for you? To check your own understanding, reformulate: So I should prepare the draft today and wait before sending it. This is not repetition without purpose. It tests whether the action and its conditions have been understood.
When you disagree, describe the problem before blaming a person. The room is still unconfirmed focuses on the situation. You never organise anything attacks someone and gives little useful information. A constructive response names a consequence and proposes a next step. If the room cannot be confirmed today, we should wait before sending the invitation. The conditional links a possible event to an action without pretending that the event has already happened.
Exemple résolu
Write a short request from Maya to Oliver, including action, deadline and a way to report a difficulty.
Résultat : Hi Oliver, could you check the two repair stands and send me the result by Thursday afternoon? Please let me know earlier if you cannot complete the checks or if either stand is unsafe to use. I need this information before confirming the equipment for Saturday. Thank you.

Sam writes: « I will send the invitation now because my draft is ready. » Reply politely and state the condition that still matters.

3. Mediate information and manage a digital identity
Mediation helps a person understand information that they did not receive directly. It is not always a translation. You may summarise a meeting in the same language, explain a specialist word or pass a decision to a new colleague. Select what the recipient needs: the task, its deadline, the decision and any remaining uncertainty. Keep the source of the information clear. If the team has only proposed a change, do not report it as an approved decision.
Digital cooperation leaves traces. A message sent from an organisational account can be understood as an official statement. Check the recipient, the status of the information and the permission to share it. A public social media post does not serve the same purpose as an internal discussion. A participant list should not be copied into a public post simply because it is useful to the team. Choose a communication channel according to the people who need the information.
For this British context, GOV.UK explains the community purpose of a community interest company. Consult https://www.gov.uk/set-up-a-social-enterprise and locate its CIC section. Explain in French why a community purpose can involve relationships with learners, employees and volunteers. Then return to the fictional case: the source does not tell you who is authorised to publish a message for Bridge Cycle. The team must establish its own responsibilities. Avoid turning a cultural example into a rule about every workplace in the United Kingdom.
Useful English structures include could you for a request, should for advice and must for a requirement that is actually established in the case. These words have different strength. We could postpone proposes an option. We should wait recommends an action. The case requires confirmation identifies a stated condition. Explain the reason rather than relying on a forceful verb. In a multicultural team, a clear shared procedure is more reliable than assumptions about how people from a country usually communicate.
Exemple résolu
Maya tells you in English that no invitation should be sent before room confirmation. A French volunteer was absent. Give a faithful French summary, then ask an English clarification question.
Maya, when do you expect the room to be confirmed, and who will tell Sam that the invitation can be sent?

4. Au bac : explain cooperation through evidence
Au bac — describe a communication situation
- Identify sender, recipient, purpose and channel. Explain whether the exchange is internal or public.
- Name a concrete difficulty: missing information, unclear responsibility or a dependency between tasks.
- Propose a precise message and explain how it helps the shared objective.
- Reformulate the answer to a partner and check that the decision, deadline and uncertainty remain accurate.
Practise a short role play with three people: coordinator, tool checker and communication assistant. Begin with the Wednesday information. One person asks for an earlier deadline, and another explains a resource constraint. Reach a clear next step and summarise who will report what. Do not invent a confirmation to make the conversation end more easily. The quality of the exchange depends on how well the participants coordinate real constraints, not on whether everyone agrees immediately.
