Présenter une organisation en anglais
Présenter en anglais
Environ 35 minutes
What does an organisation do, who does it serve, and how can we explain its purpose without repeating an advertisement?
You will build a short, evidence-based introduction in English. You will connect purpose, status and resources, then adapt your explanation for a French partner.
1. Identify purpose before listing activities
An organisation brings people and resources together to carry out a continuing activity. Its purpose explains why it exists. Its activities explain what it does. Its objectives describe results it wants to achieve. These three ideas are related, but they are not the same. A community workshop may repair bicycles as an activity, aim to offer more training sessions as an objective, and seek to improve access to practical skills as a purpose. Start with these distinctions before describing a building or listing equipment.
Constructed classroom document, fictional case: Bridge Cycle is a community interest company in Bristol. It repairs bicycles and provides introductory repair workshops. Its stated purpose is to help local people access affordable repairs and practical skills. Six paid employees and twelve volunteers contribute to its work. It rents a workshop, owns repair tools and uses a booking website. Income comes from repair charges, workshop fees and donations. The document does not give its total income or profit. It wants to offer an additional beginner session each month, but no results have yet been reported.
Read the case twice. First identify the organisation, its location and its activity. Then underline evidence about its purpose and resources. Keep unknown information separate. The text mentions donations, but this does not mean that donations pay for everything. It mentions volunteers, but this does not mean that all workers are unpaid. A good presentation keeps the different facts together without turning one detail into a complete explanation.

- Objectif : résultat recherché, à distinguer d’un résultat constaté.
- activity :
- Activité concrète réalisée par l’organisation.

Exemple résolu
Introduce Bridge Cycle in three sentences, separating purpose and activity.
Résultat : Bridge Cycle is a fictional community interest company based in Bristol. It repairs bicycles and offers beginner repair workshops. Its stated purpose is to improve access to affordable repairs and practical skills; it plans to add a monthly session, but the document does not report the result.

Name two activities and one objective from the document. Explain why the objective is different from a reported result.

The activities are repairing bicycles and providing introductory workshops. The objective is to offer an additional beginner session each month. It describes an intended change; the document does not say that the extra session has already taken place.
2. Understand a British organisational context
The letters CIC refer to a community interest company. GOV.UK describes this as a form of limited company intended to benefit the community. A social purpose and trading activity can therefore exist together. Do not translate CIC automatically as association française. The two expressions belong to different institutional settings. For this lesson, you need a clear explanation of the term, not a complete legal comparison between the United Kingdom and France.
Authentic resource to consult: GOV.UK, Setting up a social enterprise, https://www.gov.uk/set-up-a-social-enterprise. Look for the section about community interest companies. Identify who the organisation is intended to benefit. Explain the point to a French partner who thinks that every business must have only one purpose: paying private shareholders. Keep the explanation short and do not assume that all British social enterprises use the same structure.
Context helps you understand the case, but it does not replace evidence about Bridge Cycle. Knowing the meaning of CIC does not tell you whether this fictional workshop is financially stable, whether its users are satisfied or whether every repair is affordable for everyone. Those questions need other information. Avoid national generalisations such as British organisations always rely on volunteers. A specific legal term is a useful cultural anchor; a broad claim about a whole population is not.
To explain an unfamiliar word, give its function before looking for a one-word translation. You can say that a CIC is a company with a community purpose. Then explain what this means in the case: repair services and training are linked to access for local people. In French, preserve the original term and add a short explanation. This is mediation: you make an idea accessible to another person while keeping its meaning and its limits.
Exemple résolu
A French partner calls Bridge Cycle a charity because it receives donations. Correct the conclusion politely in English.
Résultat : Receiving donations does not by itself make an organisation a charity. The case describes Bridge Cycle as a community interest company. It receives donations, but it also earns income from repairs and workshop fees. We should keep its stated structure and its different sources of income separate.

Explain CIC in French for a partner, then add one English sentence about what the term does not prove in the fictional case.

3. Connect resources to activities and constraints
Human resources include people, their skills and their available time. Material resources include tools and premises. Financial resources make payments possible. Intangible resources include knowledge, reputation and information. A website is useful only if people can use it and the organisation can maintain its content. Do not present a resource as automatically sufficient. Six employees are not simply six identical units of capacity: their roles, schedules and skills may differ.
A presentation becomes more informative when you connect a resource to an activity. Repair tools enable practical work. A rented workshop provides space, but it also creates rent payments. Volunteers contribute time and skills, but the document does not say when they are available. Income from fees can support activity, but income is not the same as profit. The case gives no figures for costs, so you cannot calculate profit or claim that the organisation is profitable.
Use the present simple for established information: it repairs, it offers, it uses. Remember the final s with it. Use has for possession: it has six paid employees. Use there is or there are to introduce something in a place. To express a plan, use plans to or wants to. To show a limitation, use however or the document does not state. These small choices make your description accurate without requiring very complex sentences.
Exemple résolu
Explain how three resources support Bridge Cycle and name one uncertainty.
Résultat : Repair tools support bicycle maintenance, while employees and volunteers bring practical skills. The booking website helps organise workshop places. However, the case does not state how much staff time is available for an extra monthly session. We cannot conclude that the existing resources are sufficient for this objective.

A public library offers free digital workshops. It has no booking website, and an employee says that local residents can register at the desk. Present its service and explain why the absence of a website does not prove that registration is impossible.

4. Au bac : organise a clear oral introduction
Au bac — identity, purpose, evidence, limit
- Begin with name, place, type and activity. Explain any unfamiliar cultural term in plain English.
- Select two resources and show how they support the purpose. Avoid reading a long list from your notes.
- Distinguish an objective from an observed result. Name the document when you use evidence.
- Answer a question directly, then add one supporting fact. If information is absent, identify exactly what you would need.
Work with a partner. One person presents the case from five keywords, and the other asks how the organisation is funded. Answer from the available evidence: fees and donations are mentioned, but amounts are unknown. Then change roles and ask about staffing. The aim is to communicate a reliable picture rather than memorise a perfect paragraph.
When listening, take notes in categories rather than trying to write every word. Use identity, purpose, activity, resources and unknowns as headings on your own paper. After the presentation, summarise one connection: a resource supports an activity which serves a purpose. If the speaker confuses an objective with a result, ask whether the change has already happened. This question checks understanding and helps the speaker improve the explanation.
Erreurs fréquentes : traduire organisation par organism, confondre turnover et profit, dire that it have au lieu de that it has, ou appeler charity toute structure recevant des dons.
